Throughout his novels and short story collections, M.G. Vassanji has focused on the lives of East Indian Africans and their journey to understand the meaning of home. This fall's Living History panel brings together winner of the Governor General's Award, Paul Yee, and Her Excellency Sharon Johnston as they embark on new writing endeavors. InA Superior Man, Yee ventures into adult fiction, exploring the lives of Chinese immigrants who came to Canada to work on the railroad. Herménégilde Chiasson is a poet, playwright, artist, researcher and journalist. Since publishing his first poetry collection in 1974 he has been bringing the landscapes and people of Acadia to life, winning the Governor General's Award for his collection Conversations in 1999. Divided by language and heritage, sometimes Quebec seems like a far off country, but human experience remains the same. In Arvida Samuel Arcibald returns to his hometown, for which the book is named, to explore the events that shaped his life. With precise details and undertones reminiscent of Stephen King, Archibald's short stories prove that the power of memory permeates translation.
