Carleton University Math Enrichment Centre

Vision:
To inspire a generation of budding Mathematicians through exposure to a wide range of Math applications in Arts, Science and Beyond.

Course Outline:

Within Arts, Science, Humanities, Sports, Business and many other fields, there is Math. Each week, in this stimulating class, we will use Math as a window to the world, studying the Math foundations of these fields. In every class, the focus will be on the connection between Math and one or more subject areas (e.g. Math and Art, Sports, Ballistics, Physics and Magic). Each connection has been chosen for interest and applicability, as well as relevance to age and grade-level.

In revealing these connections, several mathematical tools are used: these include Arithmetic, Algebra, Logarithms, Geometry, Trigonometry, Probability, Statistics, Combinatorics and even some introductory Calculus—all introduced in an intuitive manner, accessible to any enthusiastic student in grades 8 to 10.

Classes will be interactive, and students will engage in the topic of discussion each week, both theoretically and, where relevant, practically.

Below is a tentative syllabus (topics will be adjusted as the course progresses):

The connection between Math and…

Architecture, Ballistics, Card Magic, Exchange Rates, Food, Forensic Computing,
Geometry of Origami, Guessing, Insurance, Mechanics, Mortgages, Mirrors, Newton’s Law of Cooling, Probability, Snow Shovelling, Statistics, The Medical Field, Tractenberg Speed Math…and more!
